Trip to England
Feb. 9th, 2004 11:11 pmSpent last week in England on a business trip, and got back this weekend. Went to London and Lincoln (north of London). It was a hectic and tiring trip, but I had a good time. Drank too much in the pubs pretty much every evening. A few things struck me:
1) Although the pubs/clubs were very crowded and in some of them people were packed in so tight that you would need a crowbar to get more people in, everyone seemed to get along and there were no problems. Even with people bumping into each other to get to the bar or restrooms it remained jovial. I do not think bars over here in the US could take such a crowd without problems, fights, etc. I was very impressed at people's behavior even when packed in and drinking.
2) There was great tolerance. At one club, straight and gay couples mingled without problems or anyone thinking it was big deal. I thought this was great, and highly doubt you would see that here.
3) In general people were extremely friendly and hospitable.
The one negative thing that I have to say is that it was a very smoky experience. Lots of people smoke and it is pretty much allowed everywhere: pubs, train stations, on trains, etc. My clothes all stunk of smoke when I got home. I did laundry right away to get rid of the smoke.
Lincoln was great; it had a way cool castle, cathedral and some Roman ruins.
Cheers
