Lack of standardization still runs rampant even within stuff that is supposed to be standard. Just spent a day dealing with a bug caused by slight but annoying differences between TCP/IP implementations on one platform. Even worse, the two different versions are by the same vendor (IBM). Instead of adding features or making existing features better, you get to spend making the same code work in slightly different environments that are different for no good reason.
Exercise - feeling optimistic
After I fixed the above problem, I went to the gym to clear my head. In addition to my usual workout (treadmill and weights), I did a little running on the nice indoor track at the gym. It felt good both physically and mentally. I ran a lot for about 10 years, and then quit in about 97 due to pretty bad lower back pain that went away completely when I stopped running. Unfortunately, I am a fairly heavy footed runner and the years of pounding took their toll. That said, I cannot believe how good a little running felt today. I hope I can keep it up, even if at low mileage. Am gonna keep it up, be real careful and see how it goes.
