Email Spam filter rant
Jun. 27th, 2004 12:03 pmI left my old ISP (the World) well over a year ago, mainly because:
1) Their spam filter was throwing away legitimate emails to me.
2) They seemed uninterested in the fixing the problem: calls to their hotline just resulted in getting the party line of "Spam is bad".
3) Given 2, I simply asked that email to me not be filtered. They refused.
I had been a loyal customer for many years, and had even recommended them to others. However, I dumped the World. IMHO, a service provider with unreliable email is worthless.
At any rate, I am now using CGI101.com which had been an excellent ISP and email service provider. However, they put in a new spam filter this last week.... This morning I was doing some email client setup work and happened to notice email was not getting through to my accounts. I sent an email to tech support, and learned that the new Spam filter delays incoming email up to a half hour. This is supposed to only happen on the first email from a sender, but I see it happening consistently (all incoming email delayed at least 20-30 minutes). Prior to the filter, incoming email response was essentially instantaneous. I have requested that my email not be subject to filtering, and they have agreed to do that so I am still happy with CGI101.com.
However, although I hate spam as much as anyone, I wish service providers would not do things by default that mess with people's email. This is the second time my non-spam email has been impacted by a providers attempt to control spam.
