Virus Scanner Annoyance/Unfairness
Mar. 12th, 2005 11:22 amI use McAfee Virus Scan on my home machine, and previously have been happy with it. Today, for work, I needed to run an FTP server briefly, and chose the Serv-U tool that I have used in the past and really liked. It is my first time running Serv-U since I started running McAfee. Routinely, I run a virus scan after installing new software and it flagged Serv-U as a "Potentially Unwanted Program".
This problem is described in detail here.
I agree with the Serv-U people, this is unfair and heavy handed. By fiddling with the settings, I can have the Virus scanner only flag Serv-U (and not delete it), but even after the work-around posted I cannot get the Virus scanner to stop flagging it. The argument that hackers might exploit an FTP server is not a good reason to flag a completely legit FTP server, and malign a product.
Am going to stop using McAfee.
