Did jury duty today.
I did not end up on a jury, and did not even get to the "accept/reject" stage since my panel was never called for consideration for a trial. It was a slow day for the judicial system, only a few jurors were needed today. Only a couple of panels out of 9 got called. That's OK, that's how the system works. It was a little boring, but I lived.
The court officer who ran the jury pool was very good at handling everyone and keeping everyone relatively happy for what turned out to be a day or "hurry up and wait" for most of us. Definitely a job that requires good people skills.... He made one joke at the orientation that I liked: He said that anyone who brought a note from their boss saying how essential they were to their jobs should keep that note and show it to their boss at performance review time. In addition to giving a chuckle, it got the message out in a non-confrontational manner that whining about being needed at work was not appropriate.
It was my first time at a courthouse since 9-11 and the increase in security was noticeable. The also have it down very well. I did international travel last week, and the security staff at the courthouse was much better than at Logan. I think they did a good job at both getting everyone in at a good pace, and checking stuff carefully. They even examined my key ring to make sure it only had keys on it.
